The Spinning Mule revolutionised the cottage spinning and weaving industry that contributed to Bolton's massive growth through history right up to modern day. On the outskirts of Bolton is picturesque Rivington which attracts cycling enthusiasts from all over the country. Bolton Ironman & Marathon

The beautiful lake swim takes place in Pennington Flash. There are numerous viewing opportunities for spectators at the start. Cyclists will embark on a 112-mile, two-loop journey from Pennington Flash and into the breathtaking countryside. The bike course includes the famous Sheep House Lane and new to 2019 the course now takes athletes into the heart of Bolton with cyclists riding on the cobbles of Le Mans Crescent, where spectators can get up close and personal with the athletes. The run begins at Queens Park and athletes will head into Bolton town centre, out and back through Queens Park completing four loops before finishing in Victoria Square. The Bolton Ironman will be held Sunday July 12th 2020

The Bolton Marathon began in Bolton in 1981 and the last one took place in 1987, but after a long wait the Bolton Marathon will return to Bolton on Sunday 17th May 2020! Organisers had originally proposed an autumn marathon, however, the event calendar across the borough cannot support an event on this scale year on year so a decision was made to move the race to late spring. This will ensure that the Bolton Marathon can run on the same weekend and be a permanent fixture for the whole town. The Bolton Marathon will be held on Sunday 17th May 2020!
